Georgia PI’s Will be Prohibited from Using Hidden GPS Tracking Devices
A proposed bill is currently on the table in the Georgia Legislature to outlaw all GPS tracking devices, which will also prohibit private investigators from placing GPS locators on vehicles. The bill does give exception to law enforcement, parents tracking their kids and commercial uses, but private investigation is not included.
Private investigators use Global Positioning System tracking devices for child custody cases, domestic assignments, employee malfeasance and cargo theft cases. Many of their discoveries while using these devices are used in court and help save thousands of dollars for clients in cases where they are used. Investigators in Georgia must be licensed and trained and must adhere to very strict regulation with the Georgia Board of Private Detective and Security Agencies. Many private investigators will be upset with this piece of legislation and should begin lobbying to get private investigators included as an exception in the bill.
