An Introduction to the July 2008 Issue of Pursuit Magazine
While we are only in our third issue since reviving the original newsletter our executive editor, Stephanie Mitchell, has brought this publication some serious credibility by providing yet another quality issue that is better than the preceding issue! In just the last few months we’ve added over 3,000 people who directly receive Pursuit Magazine via email and the May Issue was downloaded well over 8,000 times by unique users! Wow!
This issue’s theme is about the use of technology in the investigations and research fields and we’ve managed to convince three top experts in their respective fields to share their insight with us. Tom Slovenski of CellularForensics.com has written an excellent article on the basics of Cellular Forensics and Jim Atkinson, noted Technical Surveillance Counter Measures expert (think bug sweeps), has provided us with 27 hard hitting warning signs that you or your client may be “bugged;” this may sound like James Bond sort of stuff but Jim assures me that electronic eavesdropping is a dangerous reality for both people and businesses. Finally Mr. Sumit Deshpande, Vice President of the Wireless Solutions Group, wrote an eye-opening and cautionary article on the vulnerabilities of using WiFi networks. Imagine that anyone can intercept the information you are sending and receiving over a wireless network unless you are careful to take proper security measures to keep your confidential information safe.
One thing I certainly have come to understand in the investigations business is that being an expert in any area of technology requires dedication, patience and ongoing training. The only sure thing about technology is that it will continue to evolve at a high rate of speed. When I have a client or situation that requires technical expertise in a specific field (like computer forensics or TSCM) I go straight to the experts whose focus is solely on one particular subject; most oftentimes “the generalists” and those people with several specializations are not able to keep up with the continuing education involved to be able to offer my clients the very best service. Of course, there are several other outstanding and timely articles in this issue as well.
Speaking of technology…look for some tremendous changes to PursuitMag.com in the next few weeks, too. We’ve hired one of the very best web developers we could find and are sparing no expense to build a community website where users can interact with one another via forums; discuss, rate and comment on articles and other important issues; keep up with industry news and events; advertise your services in our directory and give us your opinion on hot topics.
Just like your subscription to Pursuit Magazine, these features will be absolutely free and will remain that way.
I am truly excited about this development and hope that you will join us when the site is finished at www.PursuitMag.com! I hope you enjoy this issue and as always, I look forward to your feedback!
In Pursuit of Your Success!
