Steven D. Allen
Steven D. Allen was killed on Wednesday, May 28, 2008 while attempting to deliver divorce papers and a restraining order to Loveland, Colorado resident James Scott Whitler. Whitler has been arrested and is currently being held without bail on murder charges. Whitler brutally bludgeoned Mr. Allen with a baseball bat and stabbed him to death after Allen, a process server, served him divorce documents.
This tragic death of a fellow process server deeply saddens me and I wanted to extend our deepest sympathies to Mr. Allen’ family and friends.
Let us all be reminded that it can be very dangerous out there. Process servers are generally the deliverers of bad news, so, please be careful and take the necessary precautions when serving documents.

Whitler pleads not Guilty
By Stephanie Mitchell
In a follow up to my article posted in September, I wanted to let my fellow process servers and private investigators know that James Whiltler, the Loveland, Colorado man who has been accused of killing Stepen Allen, a 57-year-old server from Fort Collins, pled-not guilty today in the Larimer County District Court.
In a hearing earlier this month, A Larimer County Sheriff Sgt. John Feyen testified that James Whitler beat Stephen Allen approximately 15 to 20 times with a baseball bat and then stabbed him. Allen died of blunt force trauma to the head.
Trial has been set for February. If convicted, James Whitler faces first-degree murder charges in the May 28 death of Stephen Allen as well as two counts of attempted first-degree murder charges for stabbing and choking his children in the family’s home that same day.
