Private Investigators in Pain: Dealing with Common Health Concerns While on the Road

April 20, 2009 by Pamela Stewart · 11 Comments

Who leaves someone in a vehicle all day with the windows rolled up? Our clients. No one would think of leaving a dog in a car on a hot day, yet Private Investigators are expected by their clients to sit in their vehicle in all kinds of weather conditions, for long hours. While the effects of exposure are obvious, investigators may experience a myriad of health problems in the field. These issues can range from back problems, bladder problems, dehydration, and psychological  problems. It’s a dangerous job, this PI business; bad guys and guns are the downfall of pulp fiction private eyes, but in real life, preventing health problems is the key to a successful career. Read more

Bail Enforcement Licensing in Michigan and the “Professional Investigator Licensure Act”

March 27, 2009 by Scott Harrell · 1 Comment

Right now there is some question concerning whether or not one needs to hold a “professional investigator’s license” in order to bounty hunt in Michigan as a result of the newly amended “Professional Investigator Licensure Act” (Michigan Penal Code Section 750.167b).

I’ve read the “Professional Investigator Licensure Act” which went into effect in May of 2008. While the law does not specify “bounty hunters” specifically, it has unquestionably expanded the definition of “private investigator” to now include “professional investigator.”

Within the new broad definition of “professional investigator” falls many types of individuals and, while I am not an attorney or offering legal advice, my personal opinion is that an independent contractor offering bail recovery services most likely fits within the framework of the new definition (I’ve only included the brief but most important section): Read more

Tracers Information Specialists (TracersInfo.com) Raises Rates

March 2, 2009 by Scott Harrell · 1 Comment

I received the following notice today from Tracers Info president regarding rate hikes on their database and information broker services.  Unfortunately, they are raising their “membership fee” 50%, which will certainly be a deal breaker with some of their current clients and will not be a good deal for lower volume private investigation agencies and skip tracers; their membership fee is in addition to the information searches and data clients already buy, unlike other service providers who will apply their monthly fee to monthly minimum database purchases instead.
