May’s theme is abuse and fraud of seniors, a population that’s incredibly vulnerable to exploitation and harm … and to falling critically ill from COVID-19. Elder care facilities have been ravaged by this pandemic, and when this crisis passes, there will be questions, and litigation, and cries for accountability. There will most likely be findings of neglect and incompetence, and lies and coverups. But there will also be tragic instances of care providers being stretched to their limits and doing their best in a terrible situation.
Investigating claims of fraud and abuse demands objectivity and intellectual rigor, and so should our response to this pandemic. We have to make decisions based on facts and acknowledge the things we don’t know. I’m specifically talking about the coronavirus, but that statement could apply to many more situations, in our work as investigators and in our lives as well.
Here’s the briefing. Be well.
