The Power of Using a Badge
|
|
A bail enforcement agent stops at a ranch in Texas, and talks with an old rancher.
He tells the rancher, “I need to search your ranch for a bail jumper I believe is hiding on your property.”
The rancher says, “Okay, but do not go in that field over there.” as he points out the location.
The fugitive recovery agent verbally explodes saying, “Mister, I have the authority of the Supreme Court and Taylor v Taintor with me.”
Reaching into his rear pants pocket, he removes his badge and shoves it into the rancher’s face.
“See this badge? This badge means I am allowed to go wherever I wish… On any land. and in any state where my fugitive may be hiding. No questions asked or answers given. Have I made myself clear? Do you understand? “
The rancher nods politely, apologizes, and goes about his chores.
A short time later, the old rancher hears loud screams and sees the bounty hunter running for his life chased by the rancher’s big Santa Gertrudis bull……
With every step the bull is gaining ground on the bail agent, and it seems likely that he’ll get gored to death before he reaches safety. The agent is clearly terrified. The rancher throws down his tools, runs to the fence and yells at the top of his lungs…..
“Your badge. Show him your BADGE!“

Editor’s note: Yes, there is a moral to this otherwise humorous story.

Excellent, to-the-point story!
As soon as the p.i. started yelling in this story it seemed quite likely trouble was brewing.
Thank you, Scott.

I had this sent to me in a email a while back, but instead of a PI it was a US Marshal, but either way it’s still hilarious.

You fellas don’t quite seemt to know the difference between a P.I. and a Bail Enforcement/Fugitive Recovery Agent, do you.

Perhaps it is you who does not understand, JetManJr… most of us believe that bail enforcement is a subset of the private investigation profession. In fact, in many states the legal requirement to work in bail fugitive recovery is that one possesses a private investigator’s license.

LOL! Scott that made me think of the line out of a great old John Huston black and white movie “Treasure of the Sierra Madre”, when Humphrey Bogart hollers at the bandits that are pretending to be law enforcement and tells them to “show us your badges”. And then the bad guy realizes he has been had hollers back “Badges? We ain’t got no badges. We don’t need no badges. I don’t have to show you any stinking badges.”

That badge is a symbol of what you do for a living. And if you’re professional, and treat people well, that badge can be carried with pride.
That badge is NOT a license. It does not give you any powers. It is not big enough to use as a shield. It is quite often hidden away while you’re working surveillance.
So, DON’T LET IT GO TO YOUR HEAD! If you do, you may get gored. And not always of the bovine kind.

I worked over 12 years in LP with over 1000 arrests, carrying a “badge” for all those years… I can probably count on two hands how many times I had to physically make and effort to “show the badge”, I preferred not to because that would usually escalate a situation. Success of an apprehension is in the agents approach, presence, and verbiage, not in a piece of metal.
Sometimes its not always wise to take the bull by its horns!!
Good story!
