Ramesh Nyberg: The 10 Must-Haves to Be a Great Detective

Hal Humphreys asks Ramesh Nyberg, a retired homicide detective, to share wisdom from his 27-year law enforcement career and his ten years of operating a private investigation agency in Miami.

How many times has this happened to you? Somebody finds out you’re a private investigator, and they say, “Oo! I’d make a great PI.”

Some would. Some wouldn’t. But what kind of person DOES make a great investigator? Is it all about innate ability and personality traits, or can good sleuthing be learned?

Here to talk to us about what makes a great detective is Ramesh Nyberg. He spent 27 years in Florida law enforcement, 22 of them as a homicide investigator. He’s written articles on police issues for police and true crime publications and wrote a column called “Rap Sheet” for the Miami Herald. After retiring from the force in 2006, he founded Nyberg Security and Investigations, a PI agency in Miami.

Now he’s got a new book out about this very topic: “The Ten Must-Haves to Be a Great Investigator” and a new podcast on investigations called “Nothing But The Truth.” He also wrote a fantastic article for Pursuit recently about the perils (or the lack thereof) of doing surveillance at Disneyworld.
