Editor’s Briefing 2.15.21 – Obsessions & Cold Cases

The editor delivers a weather report and a forecast for cool things coming up soon at Pursuit & PI Education.

Greetings, all! The weather today is <looks out window> cold as ****. At the home studio, ice is coming down like shattered glass from the sky, the heat pump has died, and the editors are very, very cold.

Not a bad time to talk about cold cases, come to think of it. As part of our February theme of obsession, we interviewed Bay-Area PI Mike Spencer last week about a case that haunted him for so long, he had no choice but to produce an investigative podcast about his re-investigation. We spoke with him about the ways obsessions can drive us to do great work — and can also overtake our lives and keep us from letting go.

Next week, we’ll host PI and author Ellen McGarrahan to talk about her new book, Two Truths and a Lie, about a case that obsessed her for decades. While working as a young reporter in Florida, she witnessed the horrifically botched execution of a man who was convicted of a double-murder. When questions arose about whether the defendant was actually guilty, she changed her life’s trajectory and became a private investigator. This book traces her quest for the truth behind the crime.

Join us at our YouTube channel next Thursday, February 25, 12:30-1:30pm ET for that conversation.

In the meantime, stay warm!

And now, here’s the briefing:
