On the holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s work, I’ve been reflecting on ways we, as investigators, can contribute to the cause of justice.
In his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” in 1963, Dr. King wrote, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” What happens in one community affects all others, he was saying.
When our system of justice fails a thousand miles away, we, as American citizens, are all indirectly harmed.
Here at PI Education and Pursuit, the offices are quiet on this snowy holiday Monday. But I’m taking this day to think about Dr. King’s message and mission. As private investigators, we have a unique opportunity to use our skills to contribute to a justice system that is ever-evolving but of course, imperfect.
In 2018, Pursuit published an article by criminal defense investigator Steven Mason about his pro bono work for the Arizona Justice Project. (Link to story below.) “As private investigators, attorneys, and members of the public at large, we have the power and moral obligation to do more,” Mason writes. “Whether we donate money to these important organizations or use our skill set to lend a much-needed helping hand, we can give a voice to those who have been forgotten.”
While you’re enjoying the holiday, I encourage you to take a moment to read Steven’s story and reflect on ways we can be defenders of justice in our own communities, by volunteering our time and skills, donating to pro-justice groups, and doing our investigative work, honestly and ethically, within the larger system.
